For Philadelphia band Alltheflowers, live music is everything. Through performing live they have found their sound, making their presence known widely across the Philly-DIY scene. Alltheflowers are Riley Hall (lead vocals, guitar), Patrick Sinisgalli (drums, vocals), Ryan Hankins (Guitar, backing vocals), Jason Hankins (Bass), and Esther Landis (Violin). Their sound can be defined as DIY indie rock, pulling a large amount of inspiration from bands such as Hop Along, Modest Mouse, The Killers and The Pixies.
Alltheflowers played at the Ukie Club on Oct. 3, opening for Midwest-emo Philly band Marietta's comeback show 10 years after their disbanding, taking the stage by storm and keeping the energy high.
Created in 2022, Alltheflowers is the result of when Hall and Sinisgalli were looking for a fun activity to do as a couple, and decided on bringing a bunch of music equipment up to a cabin to write and record songs. The band has roots within Temple University, where each member attended. The vast house-show scene at Temple allowed Alltheflowers to join a community in which live shows occurred every weekend, bands forming left and right and all of them supporting each other through every step. When they got asked to play their first live set they immediately reached out to Hankins who has been an integral part of the band’s live sound. Hankins and Landis were the final pieces to the band's puzzle, and since their addition the band has been playing shows almost every week. Each member of the band has a deep-rooted history with music. Whether it’s writing, producing, mixing, or just performing, each member has been creating since they were young.
The band walked onto the Ukie Club stage with massive smiles spread across their faces. This opening slot was a massive deal for Alltheflowers, as they have been listening to Marietta for years, even pulling a lot of inspiration from their sound. The show they had been working so hard towards, practicing every week for, was about to begin — and they delivered in every way possible. The crowd was filled with people who had no idea what to expect from them and also with those who have been following the band for a minute, the ones who screamed every lyric right back into their faces. Opening “He Said What It Do” a track off their first 3-song project titled Romance Dawn. The song starts with a strong bassline, causing heads to turn immediately. The groove of the night began, matched with contrasting screams from Sinisgalli. The crowd was moving in unison, crowd surfers screaming the lyrics with their entire being —it was electric.
The set continued on with four unreleased tracks and one freshly released song titled “Dark Souls" that will be on their upcoming EP. Just days before their performance, Alltheflowers released “Dark Souls,” a track recorded at Headroom Studios in Philadelphia. This song leans into the emo-sounding side of the band, with lyrics like, "I'm alright / I won't die again / again / Every night my eyes are dry again.” The instrumentals fill the room, the crowd opening up a mosh pit and begin to thrash their bodies around to match the emotion being poured out with every line sung.
Following “Dark Souls,”, the band played their beloved track written about a street in Philly that they have a love/hate relationship with, titled “Girard.” The fans familiar with this track quickly made it known the type of energy the song brings to the table. Multiple crowd surfers were up at once while the band all skillfully screamed the lyrics, “I don't like it here (Girard Girard) / Take my hand and steer (Girard Girard).” The song closes with a guitar solo from Hankins, gaining smiles from the stage all the way to the back of the room. The band then announced that they were about to play their last song of the night, “Things Fall Apart,” a track that always leaves everyone in awe. The crowd, although sad the set was closing, gave the band praise in a roar of cheers.
Whether it's the melodic vocals matched with the violin, or the drum beat overlapping with finger plucking, Alltheflowers leave a lasting impression on every single person they play for. Their passion for music and, more specifically performing live, shines through every second they are on and even off a stage.
