‘SOMEONE YOU NEED’ TAKES BROADSIDE BACK TO THEIR ROOTS, WHILE LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
After much anticipation, Broadside is back in a bold way. Their latest single “Someone You Need” is a reminder of the band’s past, as well as a look to the future. Released on October 10, the new single has a classic pop-punk feel, while being distinctly unique to the band. The song dives into feelings of doubt in relationships, the weight of feelings of unease and restlessness with not being the right person for someone you love, and the crushing emotions that come with trying to mend the broken pieces back together.
After signing with Thriller Records in April and dropping the catchy, anxiety-riddled single “I Think They Know,” Broadside is always looking to move forward.
Based out of Virginia, Broadside — consisting of vocalist Oliver Baxxter, guitarist Dominic Reid, and bassist Pat Diaz — has been in the game for over a decade. Their sound is constantly evolving, and can be heard throughout their discography. Old Bones, their debut album released in 2015, has a classic pop-punk sound, reminiscent of early State Champs and Paramore. Two years later, Broadside returned with Paradise, bringing in more pop elements to the pop-punk genre with a classic summertime feel. The group’s most recent album, Hotel Bleu, is a more inside look at the group and Baxxter, dealing with themes of loss, grief, isolation, and confusion.
Since the release of Hotel Bleu in 2023, Broadside have gone on multiple tours with bands such as State Champs, Silverstein, and Real Friends. In June, they released “Warning Signs,” filled with groovy rhythms and passionate lyrics about desire and yearning for someone you should not want.
“Someone You Need” begins with Baxxter on vocals, accompanied by a soft ukulele, evocative of “I Love You, I Love You, It’s Disgusting” from Paradise. Shortly after, it segues into upbeat guitar melodies and pounding drums, shifting the mood entirely.
“Maybe I drink too much / Maybe I rush things, always overthinking, baby / Watch me ruin everything,” Baxxter sings.

The song follows Baxxter as the narrator, as he laments in his loneliness away from the one he wants, doubting in himself that he is not enough for them. His body and soul are broken, and they are the missing piece, but adding the piece back to the puzzle would shatter them completely. His doubts are soul crushing, and are causing a complete collapse.
“I wish I could give you all of me / But I’m just pieces of the man I used to be / I wish I could somehow feel complete”
He knows he has messed up, and will never get what he wants back. He tries to tell himself even the fragments of this would be enough, but it will never fill the emptiness left behind that he caused. He would rather see the mistakes he made all come to fruition in the love of his life leaving him than fix himself and truly give them what they deserve. He knows he cannot do that, and it devours him whole.
“Someone You Need” is a step forward for Broadside, while staying true to their pop-punk roots. Reminiscent of Old Bones, the song feels like a classic; catchy lyrics that are a gut punch. With a chorus that will be stuck in your head for the coming weeks and an oscillation of edgy guitar and smooth vocals, the song is sure to be a hit with fans and new listeners alike.
Broadside will be playing at Slam Dunk Festival in England in May 2026. The band signed with Thriller Records this April, and are eager to continue on this new journey. Their most recent album, Hotel Bleu, reached a milestone of 100 million streams, and continues to grow every day. As they continue to evolve, experiment and expand, Broadside has much more in store.
