COSETTE AND HAN.IRL’S SINGLE ‘ROSEMARY’ WILL HAVE YOU SAYING ‘YES, I’M FREE TOMORROW NIGHT’
As rosemary is a symbol of memory and remembrance, Cosette and han.irl’s collaboration track “Rosemary” addresses similar themes — invoking the nostalgic energy of a night out. The song combines Cosette’s signature dreamy, reverb-heavy vocals, clashing sounds, and han.irl’s softer vocals and intricate production, crafting a single ready for listeners to rock out to before a night on the town.
Cosette’s music is a breath of fresh air in the hyperpop landscape, balancing high beats per minute (bpms) and riveting, layered production with heartfelt lyricism and hazy, echoey vocals. After releasing Conques, her most recent EP, and Conquest (Remixed), featuring a variety of other similar artists, Cosette is taking the collaborations further through this song with han.irl.
han.irl is also no stranger to the genre, and has been officially releasing music since 2018. Her music is quite similar to Cosette’s, mixing heavily produced, striking beats with intimate vocals, making both of these artists on the same track very complementary. Much like both of their previous music, “Rosemary” is entirely self-produced and mixed, highlighting personal, hands-on production straight from the minds of the artists themselves.
The song takes a linear storyline, detailing a series of events of seeing a romantic interest on a night out with your friend, knowing an interaction is both a mistake, but situationally imminent.
The lyrics start out in the second person but quickly shift into first person. It’s as if Cosette and han.irl are posing a hypothetical situation, but eventually commit to the fact that it is about themselves — a tongue in cheek way of divulging vulnerability.
After Cosette introduces the interest through sharp, quippy lyrics, a quick back and forth ensues between the two:
Cosette: “That’s the guy”
han.irl: “You hate him, right?”
Cosette: “No / That’s just what I’ll say until the next time I’ll see him in a bar”
From there, “Rosemary” thematically addresses the all-too-relatable experience of pursuing something —- or someone — you know is bad for you. Whether it’s for the storyline, because you’re in too deep, or simply for the thrill, the song illustrates the intrapersonal conflict between the head and the heart. “Yes I’m free tomorrow night” repeats throughout the track, serving as a reminder on how you can get roped in at every opportunity and be willing to do it over and over again without thinking about long term implications; just taking it day by day, moment by moment. The lush, bright beat of the song and dreamscape it paints complements the idea that there is something beautiful about living in the moment, despite the heartbreaking aspect of the reckless decisions.
The production is layered with electronic beats and rich, bright synths, melting perfectly into both Cosette and han.irl’s echoey vocals. The song and its backing music flow quickly, reflecting perfectly the chaos and fluttering energy of a night out. Musically, the song is particularly strong in its ability to not only complement Cosette and han.irl’s vocal strengths, but also provide a consistent pulse to mirror the shimmering, dynamic energy of the lyrics, just as vibrant as the moments they are describing.
“Rosemary” remains the ultimate living in the moment, night-out anthem, subjecting listeners to the sonic version of a chaotic night on the town. It’s a song to say yes to, to laugh to, to dance to, and to cry the day after to. Whether you're planning a wild adventure of a night out, or you’re reflecting on the aftermath of a spontaneous decision, “Rosemary” will have you saying “Yes, I’m free tomorrow night” to create those memories all over again.
