COMING TO YOU LIVE FROM FAWLERS’ DEBUT SINGLE ‘IN SILENCE’

In a radio world full of blaring synths and autotune, FAWLERS brings back the rawness that has been lost in music with their debut single “in silence.” It’s a magnetic track wrapped in unfiltered energy that reminds the listener how invigorating live instruments can be. FAWLERS delivers this guitar-led rock banger in a way that’s rough around the edges, finding perfection in the imperfect. Their debut single is a captivating representation of who FAWLERS are going to be as a band: big, bold, and real.

A newly formed trio hailing from Oxford, U.K., FAWLERS consists of Ben Comley (vocals and rhythm guitar), Alistair Nolan (lead guitar), and Jamie Langford (drums). The three of them came together earlier this year having each gained experience playing in separate bands. Each of their separate experiences, dipping their toes in various genres, has resulted in a combined sound that blurs the genre lines. With “in silence,” FAWLERS naturally channels the emotion of grunge, intensity of rock, and the raw grit of punk, making them an exciting new act in the music scene.

Despite being a new band, FAWLERS already have clear musical intuition with one another, and this bleeds through the song. Each instrument moves with, not around, the others, bouncing the energy off each other as if each note is a jolt of inspiration. Unsurprisingly, the band recorded this song live in just a handful of takes. This fact alone emphasizes FAWLERS’ rare energy of a band that feeds off each other’s instincts.

Not only is the energy of the song memorable, but so are the lyrics. Sung with Comley’s gravelly vocals, and his rasp that peeks out at the end of verses, there is a certain emotional strength woven into every word. When conveying this strength, FAWLERS adds in a poetic cleverness that stands out: “Saving your breath like it’s rent,” is a striking simile that revolves around the feeling of holding back what wants or needs to be said. In the chorus, Comley passionately sings, “Does it get you lost? / In all the faces that you wish you never loved?” It paints a picture of the secluding cycle of past connections that may linger, giving the song an air of regret and reflection.

The concert-esque musicality of “in silence” is woven together by Nolan’s guitar-led melodies, Langford’s dynamic drumming, and Comley’s gruff vocals. Floaty harmonies dance around in the back of the verses and pre-chorus, which in turn bring out the roughness and texture in the chorus. The thickness of the cymbals fills the air before the power of the guitar overtakes it in the chorus. The bridge is a gripping, intimate moment where the only things the listener is enveloped by are bare vocals, a thumping kick drum, and subtle guitar flickers. The listener feels as if they are in the room when the song was recorded and can feel the same emotions Comley felt when he was belting out his raspy adlibs. When the feedback-ridden guitars signal the fading out of the track, the listener already has their finger on the replay button.

With “in silence,” FAWLERS have cracked the code on how to create a standout debut track, while still leaving room to experiment and keep their listeners itching for more. This fresh band lets their music speak for itself — no bells and whistles — and it is a daring statement that buzzes with energy. If FAWLERS continue with this authentic intention, they won’t just be recording live — they’ll be playing live on their own tour.
